Buying jewellery for someone who really loves jewellery can feel like a risky game. Gold or silver? Hoops or studs? Everyday or statement? And what on earth is her ring size?
If your Christmas shopping has brought you here, don’t panic. Whether you’re shopping for your girlfriend, wife, sister, best friend or someone who has very helpfully sent you this link, there are a few things to look out for before you buy.
Consider this your cheat sheet.
1. Is she a gold or silver girl?
First things first, take a look at the jewellery she already wears.
If everything is gold, chances are she’s a gold girl. If she never leaves the house without her silver hoops, stick with silver. And if she mixes the two? Congratulations, you’ve just doubled your options.
Christmas probably isn’t the time to convince someone to switch teams, so when in doubt, go with what you know she already loves.
The good news? Some of our By Rae favourites, including the Piha T-Bar Hoops, Mini Knot Studs and Pinky Promise Ring, come in both gold and platinum – so you can stick to her usual team.
2. What jewellery does she actually wear?
This might sound obvious, but pay attention to the pieces she reaches for every day.
Does she always have hoops in? Is her ear full of tiny studs? Does she layer necklaces but rarely wear rings? The jewellery she already owns is basically a shopping list hiding in plain sight.
For someone with multiple piercings, adding to her Nap Stack is an easy way to choose something that works with the pieces she already has. If she’s never without a pair of hoops, find a new pair to add to the rotation. And if necklaces are more her thing, look for something she can layer with the chains she already wears.
The aim is to find something that feels at home in her jewellery collection - not something that just looks lovely in the box.
3. What’s her style?
Now you’ve worked out ‘what’ she wears, look at ‘how’ she wears it.
If her jewellery is usually delicate and minimal, a huge statement piece might not suddenly convert her on Christmas morning. Likewise, if she loves chunky hoops, stacked rings and layered necklaces, something super delicate might get a little lost.
Look at the size, shape and style of her favourite pieces and use those as your clues. If she keeps things simple, an everyday pair of hoops or a classic chain is a good place to start. If she likes something a little bolder, go for a chunkier hoop, a signet ring or a necklace she can add into her existing stack.
And remember, you don’t necessarily need to find one perfect standalone piece. Sometimes the best gift is something that slots straight into the jewellery she already loves.
4. Do you actually know her size?
Be honest.
If you know her ring size, great. If you don’t, Christmas probably isn’t the time to start guessing. Take a look at the jewellery she already owns or, if you can do it without giving the game away, enlist a friend to help.
Still not sure? Earrings and necklaces are a much safer option - they still feel personal, without the sizing stress.
Set on buying her a ring? Do a little detective work first. Trust us, it’s worth it!
5. Will it fit into her everyday life?
This is the bit that’s easy to forget.
The best jewellery gifts aren’t necessarily the ones saved for special occasions - they’re the ones that become part of her everyday.
If she goes straight from work to Pilates, lives in her jewellery on holiday or simply never remembers to take it off before jumping in the shower, choose pieces that can keep up with her.
By Rae jewellery is waterproof and designed for real life, so she doesn’t need to plan her day around what she’s wearing. Think jewellery she can put on Christmas morning and still be wearing long after the decorations have come down.
That’s the kind of gift we like.
Still stuck?
If you’ve made it this far and still have absolutely no idea what she’d choose, don’t panic.
Go back to what you know: her usual metal, the type of jewellery she wears most and the pieces she already reaches for on repeat.
For the hoop girl, The Chubby Essential Hoops are an easy win. If she loves her rings, the Signet Pinky Promise Ring adds something a little more personal (providing you’ve done your sizing detective work). And if choosing for her still feels slightly terrifying, there’s always a By Rae gift card.
